altAfter the devastating news relating to the volcanic eruption in Iceland, there was ambivalent views and feelings about the number of people who would actually succeed in making it to the congress. However, the great news is that despite many pre-booked as well as amended flights being cancelled, many psychology students show their devotion for EFPSA. Overall, there were 190 participants out of an original total of 250 who managed to find alternative means of travel in order to reach to congress. Some of these included bus, car, ferry and even the odd possible hitchhike. We would like to thank all participants who attended and express our empathy for those who could not make it, as the EFPSA spirit continues to spread through the minds, hearts and bodies of all fellow EFPS-i-ans.

Ask yourself the question of whether a group of unique individual minds can beat a volcano? Well, as it appears the overall result is EFPSA 1 – Volcano 0.

Scientific and Social programme

It is now time to proceed on to tell all of our wonderful readers about the amazing scientific programme that took place. This saw professors and senior lectures give delightful presentations about their work, as well as provide an account of personal experiences relating their professional field of study. Workshops were also given by various students who participated in the congress. Some of these interesting topics included ‘Stereotype Change’, ‘Free your brain’ and ‘Are men from Mars and women from Venus?’
To open the social events of the congress members of EFPSA gave presentations about their countries to each other. Diversity was much in the air at this point and everyone was feeling the true spirit of EFPSA, whilst expanding ‘freeing their minds’. Another intercultural experience was ‘meet the Dutch day’ where students attending various universities across the Netherlands were invited to meet the congress participants of EFPSA.

Additional Entertainment

Further highlights to the round up of last week's events were the Cultural Evening. This is where participants of the congress experience a night of exotic food and drink tasting from all 26 Member and Observer countries of EFPSA situated across Europe. The International Disaster Band also saw the new BM perform their debut single 'You Say Yes' to a live audience wearing traditional Dutch style clogs.
Moreover, the excursion day consisted of a great trip to Amsterdam. Here participants learned about the history and cultural aspects of the city, alongside some of its controversial legislation.
However, this would not have been possible without the help of the lovely Org.com. They worked continuously on the Congress project throughout the last two mandates, to bring together scientific, social and cultural diversity in the most enriching environment.
Through cultural exchange and open mindedness, EFPSA is proud to say that the 24th Congress was a truly amazing encounter!
